為什麼要選擇大英百科全書電子版？
1.與Microsoft Encarta的比較：
Microsoft Encarta的誕生，確實讓我眼前一亮。它完完全全把文字性的工具書變成了一個活潑生動的多媒體交互軟件。有視頻動畫，有3D虛擬觀光，有遊戲測驗，有網址鏈接。但是Encarta從2006版起，就要屈身於所謂的Student，與Word等等軟件結合起來，組成一個供學生做作業，寫論文的平台。本來Encarta所用的文字就很淺\顯生動，讓人們能輕鬆學到新知識，但是現在，我很懷疑Encarta能否電子百科全書的代名詞，總覺得它越來越幼稚了。孩子是未來，激發他們對萬事萬物的好奇心，引導他們探索未知的廣闊世界，這是個神聖的榮耀。但是，成人更需要一本好的電子百科全書，需要一個整理知識，擴展知識的平台。
2.Britannica2007浴火重生：
Britannica的悠久歷史，注定了它在數字化的猶豫。它一直以來都是靠書籍發行得以生存並鞏固獨一無二的權威性。當Encarta向世界宣言學習原來可以這麼有趣時，Britannica只是跟在後面發行了一個金山詞霸式的電子版，再附加幾個視頻片斷而已，而且軟件界面極其不友好。但是Britannica2006開始，Britannica看到了百科全書只有一個未來，那就是人們不僅僅需要一套百科全書擺在家裡充門面，而是迫切需要不斷地學習充電，趕上時代發展的步伐。最值得一提的是2006版引入了BrainStormer（基於軟件PersonalBrain的創新），把滿天繁星的知識點編織成一個個迷人的星座圖。人們不僅能從一個知識點鏈接到另一個知識點（哪個電子版百科全書都有這個功能），而且能讓知識發散性思維，從而引發靈感，推動創造力。
2007版更引入了 Virtual Notecards，讓人們能更好的整理知識，提高學習效率。而Encarta2007卻沒有進步。並且，Encarta引以為豪的許多多媒體功能，Britannica在2006版已經青出於藍而勝於藍了。
3.維基百科VS大英百科
前不久，維基百科創始人與大英百科主編進行了一場辯論（全文引用）。自古英雄出少年，雖然維基很年輕，卻顛覆了人們獲得知識的途徑。維基百科的DVD版是網站的備份，毫無交互性可言，只不過裡面的知識點確實比大英百科要廣闊，而且很多話題是大英百科望而止步的。
我一直想對維基百科評論點什麼，卻怕自己太過平庸，沒有話語權，只會淪為笑話，惹人非議。也正是這一點，我很懷疑，普通人是否有必要寫就一本百科全書，博客已經為個人的言語提供了平台，為什麼（有什麼理由）個人的言語能貼上百科全書的招牌，讓人稱之為知識？難道知識不需要權威性嗎？在維基百科上不斷地爭執，刪改，就一定是真理嗎？當然，大把的專家學者、內幕人士也會在維基百科上作貢獻。但是人性的弱點就是自以為是，除非每個貢獻者有強烈的責任感，否則維基百科只能成為BBS。而大英百科的責任感，是當前的維基百科所不能企及的。
4.非主流的百科全書：
呵呵，百家爭鳴也是件好事，不然大英百科要搞壟斷了，歪理有可能也變成真理。
我還記得在圖書館第一次觸摸到大英百科時的興奮與歎息，一如裡面的蘊含的知識，無法佔有。感謝數字化，讓每人都有機會擁有一部大英百科。雖然非法傳播給大英百科造成了傷害，但是不菲的價格和購買的不便，確實也是無奈之舉。熾熱的愛，往往會傷及別人。
