以下内容选材于《英汉汉英翻译教学综合指导》
作为翻译的手段，增补方法是必不可少的。适当的增补可以使译文更贴切，意义更清楚，语句更通畅。增补方法可分两种：
(一)句法结构所需要的增补
（1）补充动词
1．The quarrels of friends are the opportunities of foes.
朋友间的不和，就是敌人进攻的机会。
2．An American officer slipped on a banana skin.
一个美国军官踩在香蕉皮上滑倒了。
（2）补充连接词
1．Past retirement age, the diminutive Dr. Lin is as vivacious as ever.
身体瘦小的林大夫，虽然已过了退休年龄，可是她和过去一样，仍精力充沛。
2．More thorough testing might have caught the failure initially.
如果测试更为彻底，也许一开始就能找出故障。
(二)语意完整所需要的增补
（1）补充词语使抽象名词具体化
When I arrived I found her sitting on the step. She looked lonely and pathetic.
我一到那里，就看到他正坐在屋前的门廊上，显出一种抑郁而孤寂的神情。
（2）补充概括词
The principal functions that may be performed by vacuum tubes are rectification, amplification, oscillation, modulation, and detection.
真空管的五大主要功能是：整流、放大、振荡、调制和检波。
（3）补充说明词
1．The foreign guests went to the Great Wall by a Red Flag.
外宾乘红旗牌小轿车前往长城。
2．According to Gaues, mathematics is the queen of the sciences.
按照高斯的说法，数学是科学中的皇后。
（4）译文必须补充必要的词语，才能忠实反映原作内容，并使译文通顺流畅，这类增补情况，因文而异，比较多样。
1．All nations, big or small, should be equal.
国家不分大小，应该一律平等。
2．The sail was patched with flour sacks and, furled, it looked like the flag of permanent
defeat.
那面帆上补了一些面粉袋，收起来的时候，看去真像一面标志着永远失败的旗帜。
3. Mercury is by no means abundant or widely distributed.
水银的贮藏量并不丰富，分布也不广。 |
