Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe says Tokyo would welcome a visit by Chinese President Hu Jintao. Shinzo Abe said Monday that Mr. Hu's statement that he would like to go to Japan reflects the importance of relations between Tokyo and Beijing. Mr. Hu Jintao told a Japanese diplomat Saturday that he hopes to visit Japan at an appropriate time under the right conditions.
Relations between the two countries have been strained by disputes over interpretations of history and rights to natural resources. One main sticking point has been the repeated visits by Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to Tokyo's Yasukuni shrine, where some convicted war criminals are honored along with Japan's other war dead.
