Culture & Communication
delphiking
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. I’m very happy to share with you some of my thought on the topic of “Culture and Communication”. Nowadays, the earth if often considered as global village. With increasing contact between China and the other country, we are involved in cultural communication all the time. So,a better understanding cultures is becoming more importance. But have you ever thought how to solve the problem of the miscommunication?
Generally, “Culture” is a very big concept. As used by anthropologists, culture means any human behavior and customary manner. It is comprisedof intangible elements such as values, beliefs and habits, norms, emotions ,attitudes and so on . It is important to recognize that culture forges and shapes the individual communication. For example, China culture is deeply rooted in Confucianism which emphasis on proper social relationship. As Chinese proverb says :”Silence is golden”,Chinese people are always implicit.while people in western world spent a great deal of time focusing on equality, fairness and justice issues.
Communication means exchange ideas. In my opinion , much of the misunderstanding comes from a lack of awareness about the other’s traditions. People usually use one’s own values to judge others.
I am gonna share a story with you. Professor Johnson was invited to give a guest lecture at a Chinese university. The students were very attentive. They applauded warmly when the lecture come to an end. However, Professor Johnson was disappointed when no one asked any questions, even after they were encouraged to do so. In fact, most students avoided eye contact with him as he tired to communicate with him. What Professor Johnson experienced is typical in China. Generally, Chinese teachers don’t encourage students to question. questioning might be looked upon as challenging the authority of the lecturer. In addition, asking question might suggest you were unable to understand, and you will “lose your face”. While students in North American and Europe are encouraged exchange their ideas freely. How to build a bridge over the cultural rivers? It is essential for us to realize that “All people have the right to be equal and the equal right to be different”. If we can do everything from this viewpoint, we can communicate with others effectively. Then, when we have a strong desire to communicate, we can face and attempt to conquer the difficulties of different cultural background.
Today, China is promoting reform and opening-up. we are trying to learn more about the world. The advantage of internet communication gives us possibility to have a good communication. So, let’s seize this opportunity work together, meet challenge to make a better understanding of culture.
Finally, thank you very much. Wish you a good afternoon.
