MAS to cut jobs after deal with AirAsia
Malaysian Airline System said yesterday it would cut 6,500 jobs, a third of its workforce, after reaching a deal with AirAsia, a local budget carrier, to share the country’s domestic flight network. The job cuts are seen as unprecedented in Malaysia, where sackings at state-owned companies have been taboo for political reasons.
The move could revive investor interest in state companies after complaints that the government was making slow progress in restructuring.
MAS agreed to hand over most of its domestic flights to AirAsia after mounting losses last year. The national carrier said government requirements that it service 118 local routes were a main cause of its financial problems because only four routes were profitable. |
