From the end of last century, the collectivism① of China, established in the middle of 20th century, has gradually broken down and then turned toward individualism. Since the preliminary set-up of the system to guarantee individual’s rights and interests, we ----the word frequently used during the era of planned economy②----has been replaced by the more popular word I. I like the word I so much that I accordingly appreciate other I (namely, other individuals) as well, because we must be empty, hollow, fragile and unable to withstand a single blow without the involvement and corporation of countless I.
Others, however, serves as the connecting-point between we and I and the basis of the existence of the two words as well. If I is over emphasized and magnified while others are abandoned, I will find itself in an isolated position surrounded by enemies. Traditionally, the concept of others, in most cases, is as meaningless as the memorial tablet used in ancestral worship, which can be testified to by the Chinese idiom “to use one’s neighbor’s field as a drain”③ and the proverb “to sweep the snow out of one’s own door and take no care of the frost on others’ roof”④. Even in the bloom of the ideal education of collectivism, others, instead of becoming part of the self-consciousness of Chinese people, are associated with informers, betrayers, dissidents, dangerous people, and those who set one party against another. Under such a system, collectivism finally brings about the serious consequence that all regard others as horrible as hell. Thus, people tremble with fear on hearing or seeing others. Perhaps it is just because of the fear of others that we quickly collapsed after the Cultural Revolution. Since then, I alone is left on the historical stage while others have to disappear from public attention. Later, it further degenerates into an insignificant function word without any concrete meaning. Then, public morality becomes the blind spot in the area of others.
Ever since the 1950s, limited living space has become more and more densely populated by rapid population growth. The population pressure becomes the long-term heavy burden of economic development and hygienic care. Resistance of the popularization of birth control⑤ is still strong in some rural and remote areas. They may refute, “It’s none of your business when I give birth to more than one child.” Nevertheless, have they ever considered the well-being of others in terms of the population problem? What’s worse, restaurants indulge in purchasing, slaughtering and cooking wild animals to seek exorbitant profits. Eaters shamelessly feast upon wild animals to satisfy their taste buds or to show off their wealth. Government officials list the rare wild animals on the menu for banquets of the highest standard, or bribe highranking authorities in order to climb up a higher official ladder. Have they ever considered the well-being of others as they destroy the ecology in such a human-oriented world? For years, the sanitation system in urban and rural areas has never been given proper attention, including the untidy environment of offices, daily disinfection of public places, equipment for washing in public restrooms, and disposal of sewage and garbage in daily life, to name just a few. The supervisors and those supervised, however, share such an amazing attitude that they alone are not responsible for it. Have they ever thought about others when they see the neglected spots devoid of hygiene? With the pass of time, people have already developed innumerable bad habits such as drinking and driving, spitting、defecating、 urinating、smoking, littering peel and plastic bags in public places, and the habits that resist hygienic behavior of communal eating, and so on and so forth. The saying “worrying about the unequal distribution rather than the shortage of resources” well expresses our traditional culture. While sharing benefits and misfortune with others equally, have they ever had the sense of responsibility to prevent the disaster of others by self-discipline?
We seem to have been unwittingly paving a barrier-free way to greet the “other-oriented value”. In public area, however, “zero distance” is harmful. Distance is representative of others which means morality. In addition to individuals like you and me, there’re more strange he (others) and it (animals which co-exist with human beings) in the world. For the safety and freedom of I, pleases care more about others but not myself. The fulfillment of my freedom puts an end to the freedom of others. Only I can be free under the condition that others enjoy their freedom.
