Product Description:

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become an increasingly important topic in our global society. Corporate Social Responsibility Across Europe is the first volume of its kind to bring together twenty-three national perspectives on this issue. Thirty-seven European researchers worked on the book, which provides a comprehensive and structured survey of CSR developments and progress at national levels. An overview and analysis is provided for each country. Topics addressed include business and societal mindsets in the different cultural settings, national drivers for the current development of CSR, and prospects for the individual countries in the future. Furthermore it contains three comprehensive pan-European analyses. The chapters also contain practical information and references to the Internet as well as relevant literature in order to support further research and stimulate business activities in this field. The result is a rather unique collection of essays on the topic of CSR across Europe.

Home Ownership and Social Inequality in Comparative Perspective (Studies in Social Inequality)

Product Description:

Although a strong indicator of social status, home ownership has rarely emerged as a topic in social inequality research. This book compares twelve countries—the United States, Germany, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Israel—to determine the interdependence of social inequality and homeownership attainment over the life course. Examining countries that are similar with respect to socioeconomic development, but different in regard to their housing policies, the authors show that housing policies matter and are largely consistent with a country’s general approach in the provision of welfare.

This book presents a valuable contribution to the social stratification literature, which traditionally has neglected the dimension of home ownership. It goes beyond most housing studies by adopting a life-course framework and longitudinal approach. The empirical findings provide evidence that in all countries under study—even those of the social democratic welfare regime type—labor market position matters in one’s chances to become a homeowner.

Product Description:

Child labor is a complex social and political issue with a long and evolving history. The phenomenon of child labor, including prostitution, has been a focus of debate especially in the last two centuries and continues to generate fierce reactions. An unprecedented number of children around the world are working today. This volume is a must-have, up-to-date survey for student research. In the 15 examined countries, poverty, lack of education, gender inequity, the demands of the global marketplace, and easy sex tourism are key factors contributing to the child labor crisis. Each chapter depicts the child labor scene in a particular country, along with detailed conditions, the history of the problem, the present state of child labor, political policies and social aspects, and the ultimate outlook. The scope of the topic is wide, and basic definitions of what constitutes "child" and "labor" vary from country to country. International laws and conventions promoted by labor and human rights groups are establishing new norms to counteract harsh cultural and economic realities, but these and similar local laws are hard to enforce. These issues are explored, and vignettes from the children's point of view add a human-interest angle to the narrative.

Social Security and the Stock Market: How the Pursuit of Market Magic Shapes the System

Book Description:

The U.S. retirement income system faces an enormous challenge as the Baby Boom generation nears retirement age. Social Security faces a long-term shortfall, defined benefit plans have become few and far between, and 401 (k) plans have failed to yield the accumulations that many people thought they would. How will future retirees get by? Many observers suggest that equities would help solve this problem. In this book from the Upjohn Institute, Alicia H. Munnell and Steven A. Sass explore the use of equities as a means of solving Social Security's financing problems. While including equities in some form promises the potential for higher yields that could keep the system afloat, the use of equities also poses a host of challenges that could dramatically alter the structure of Social Security. Munnell and Sass identify these challenges and their implications for the U.S. retirement income system. They base their findings on experiences that three nations (the UK, Australia, and Canada) have had with the use of equities as part of their retirement systems and point out the successes and setbacks that occurred in each country as a result. Overall, this highly readable book will appeal to anyone looking for answers to the financing problems facing Social Security and the rest of the U.S. retirement income system.

Beyond Dogmatics: Law and Society in the Roman World (Edinburgh Studies in Law)

Product Description:

This book is an important contribution to the current lively debate about the relationship between law and society in the Roman world. This debate, which was initiated by the work of John Crook in the 1960's, has had a profound impact upon the study of law and history and has created sharply divided opinions on the extent to which law may be said to be a product of the society that created it. This work is a modest attempt to provide a balanced assessment of the various points of view. The chapters within this book have been specifically arranged to represent the debate. It contains an introductory chapter by Alan Watson, whose views on the relationship between law and society have caused some controversy. In the remaining chapters a distinguished international group of scholars address this debate by focusing on studies of law and empire, codes and codification, death and economics, commerce and procedure. This book does not purport to provide a complete survey of Roman private law in light of Roman society. Its primary aim is to address specific areas of the law with a view to contributing to the larger debate.

Society or external influences

This book, on economics, law, and technology, concentrates on the influences of society and groups outside your sphere. This book has practical, day-to-day keys that you can use to make your venture successful.

Excerpt:

How vast is the topic of Leadership and Success? How can you benefit from skills in leadership? Can there be success without leadership in some area? Are the principles the same for an individual, a group, or a society? Are the practices the same for an individual, a group, or a society? Is this a topic that can be taught or is it something that is innate? How do you define leadership? What is success?

These are just some of the questions answered in the series on Leadership and Success. The topic is too broad for a single book. A series of three volumes provide the foundations for continued personal development and growth.

Each book in the Leadership & Success series addresses a different group of topics, each related to your success as a leader. The structure of this series is based on the three areas of leadership involvement: internal development, horizontal interactions, and vertical relationships. The progression of the three books is arranged in the order in which you, as a leader, can have the most impact: people, organization, and society.

Some of the articles published in this issue focus on the sources of conflict and violence as well as law's response to both. Here research illustrates the complex ways law can be said to be both opposed to violence and yet be violent itself. Other articles focus on the way judges and other legal actors use law as they interpret it. Taken together they exemplify the exciting and innovative work now being done in interdisciplinary legal scholarship.

Free Culture: How Big Media Uses Technology and the Law to Lock Down Culture and Control Creativity
By Lawrence Lessig

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Book Description:

From "the most important thinker on intellectual property in the Internet era" (The New Yorker), a landmark manifesto about the genuine closing of the American mind.

Lawrence Lessig could be called a cultural environmentalist. One of America's most original and influential public intellectuals, his focus is the social dimension of creativity: how creative work builds on the past and how society encourages or inhibits that building with laws and technologies. In his two previous books, Code and The Future of Ideas, Lessig concentrated on the destruction of much of the original promise of the Internet. Now, in Free Culture, he widens his focus to consider the diminishment of the larger public domain of ideas. In this powerful wake-up call he shows how short-sighted interests blind to the long-term damage they're inflicting are poisoning the ecosystem that fosters innovation.

All creative works-books, movies, records, software, and so on-are a compromise between what can be imagined and what is possible-technologically and legally. For more than two hundred years, laws in America have sought a balance between rewarding creativity and allowing the borrowing from which new creativity springs. The original term of copyright set by the Constitution in 1787 was seventeen years. Now it is closer to two hundred. Thomas Jefferson considered protecting the public against overly long monopolies on creative works an essential government role. What did he know that we've forgotten?

Lawrence Lessig shows us that while new technologies always lead to new laws, never before have the big cultural monopolists used the fear created by new technologies, specifically the Internet, to shrink the public domain of ideas, even as the same corporations use the same technologies to control more and more what we can and can't do with culture. As more and more culture becomes digitized, more and more becomes controllable, even as laws are being toughened at the behest of the big media groups. What's at stake is our freedom-freedom to create, freedom to build, and ultimately, freedom to imagine.

Law's Madness (The Amherst Series in Law, Jurisprudence, and Social Thought)

Product Description:

Law and madness? Madness, it seems, exists outside the law and, in principle, society struggles to keep these slippery terms separate. From this perspective, madness appears to be law's foil, the chaos that escapes law's control and simultaneously justifies its existence. Law's Madness explores the gray area between the realms of reason and madness.
The distinguished contributors to Law's Madness propose a fascinating interdisciplinary approach to the instability and mutual permeability of law and madness. Their essays examine a variety of discursive forms—from the literary to the historical to the psychoanalytic—in which law is driven more by narrative than by reason. Their studies delineate the ways in which the law takes its definition in part from that which it excludes, suppresses, or excises from itself, illuminating the drive to enforce barriers between non-reason and legality, while simultaneously shedding new light on the constitutive force of the irrational in legal doctrine.
Law's Madness suggests that the tense and paradoxical relationship between law and madness is precisely what erects and sustains law. This provocative collection asks what must be forgotten in order to uphold the rule of law.
Austin Sarat is William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Jurisprudence and Political Science at Amherst College. Lawrence Douglas is Associate Professor of Law, Jurisprudence, and Social Thought at Amherst College. Martha Merrill Umphrey is Associate Professor of Law, Jurisprudence, and Social Thought at Amherst College.

Studies in Legal Logic (Law and Philosophy Library)

Publication Date:2005-08-11
ISBN-10 / ASIN:1402035179

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Product Description:

Studies in Legal Logic is a collection of nine interrelated papers about the logic, epistemology and ontology of law. All of the papers were written after the publication of the author’s Reasoning with Rules and supplement the issues addressed therein. Some of the papers are new; others have been revised substantially after the publication of their original versions. The emphasis is on analysis, not on logical technicalities.

Studies in Legal Logic contains chapters about the nature of norms, the role of coherence in the law, the nature of defeasibility, the role of dialectics in law and artificial intelligence, the statics and dynamics of the law, and the consistency of rules. Moreover, it contains a new, simplified and yet more powerful version of Reason-based Logic and extensive examples of how it can be used for the analysis of legal reasoning. The examples deal with legal theory construction, case-based reasoning, and judicial proof.

Studies in Legal Logic is primarily intended for researchers and students in the fields of analytical jurisprudence and artificial intelligence and law. It should also be of interest for readers interested in the philosophy of logic and epistemology.
