Are showy gates important?

AN Internet message, revealing the building costs of several extravagant Chinese university entrances, has drawn a lot of attention.

According to the writer, Liaocheng University in Shandong Province built a tremendous gate that was said to have cost a total of 80 million yuan. Several other universities also reportedly spent over 10 million yuan for their own gates.

Many universities listed in the message denied the allegations. Liaocheng University, for example, claimed it had only spent 3 million on the gate — not 80 million.

But that hasn't stopped netizens from complaining. They say 3 million yuan is still too much to spend on a gate.

They argue the money could be used to help poor students, or to recruit better professors. Building expensive gates is a waste of schools' limited funds, they say.

Others think that they needn't make a fuss about it. Universities put up grand gates to give themselves a good image. So, there's nothing wrong with it.

What's your opinion? Should universities spend a lot of money on a gate?
