Eliminate the college thesis?
DO college students face too much pressure struggling with their graduation thesis and trying to find a job at the same time?Tu Yanguo, a professor at Huazhong Normal University, recently made a bold suggestion. He said that universities should relieve undergrads of the pressure of writing a thesis so that they can focus on job-hunting, reported Beijing Morning Post .
Tu's proposal has the support of other educators who complain that the quality of the papers submitted in recent years has been declining. Plagiarism is one problem. For some, doing research simply means copying information from the Internet. It's also possible to get someone else to write the paper.
However, many professors appreciate the strain students are under in their job-hunting and let questionable papers past. The graduation thesis has become a mere formality instead of an indicator of how well the student has mastered and can apply the knowledge he or she has gained.
So, should universities give up the thesis chase and make both graduation and job-hunting easier?
