China arrested 37 important drug dealers in 06

Chinanews, Beijing, June 26 – In 2006, China arrested 37 big drug dealers who have stayed in other countries for a long time. In addition, police cracked down some drug gangs, said Zhang Xinfeng, deputy director of the China National Center for Drug Prohibition, the Legal Daily reported.

“For a long time many big drug dealers hidden in northern Myanmar have guided traffickers to trade drugs in China. Although they are not large in number, they jeopardize public security,” Yang, who is also deputy director of the Ministry of Public Security, told this reporter.

Policemen traced the activities of 85 drug dealers. In order to catch them, police staff from the Ministry of Public Security worked with local police in Yunnan Province and their counterparts in Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and the Philippines to launch a joint campaign.

“We worked with all parties in society and launched a special action to crack down drug dealing. In only three months, we focused our attention on 88 drug gangs and ransacked 1,239 drug dealers. So far, we had cracked down 73 drug gangs and arrested 959 suspects. Meanwhile, police worked with administrative people in the cultural, and industrial and commercial departments to crack down some entertainment venues involved in drug trading activities. The media exposed these entertainment venues to the public. In Beijing, police had taken effective measures to crack down drug dealing activities in entertainment venues where a large amount of new drugs were taken,” Zhang said.

Information shows that in 2006, police had handled 46,000 drug dealing cases and arrested 56,000 suspects. Police cracked down 745 drug gangs and destroyed 186 drug-making places and confiscated 5.79 tons of heroin, 5.95 tons of ice drug, 1.69 tons of opium, 454,000 rolling pills, and 1.78 tons of Ketamine. Police worked hard to crack down the sales of drugs by retail.
