a foul cross the river

I was a young kid of a smart lady. My mom gave birth to me and brought me up beside a beautiful river with green fresh pasture decorated along its bank. We have lots of neighbours, all warm-hearted and always willing to help.
I enjoyed my home and my time with my friends. If someone would share his life experiences with me, I'd be very glad to hear and tried to learn some from it. Time flies, and before long I became old enough to face my first big challenge.
One day, mom asked me a favor."Would you please take this sack of grain to the oppsite side of the river for me, dear?" I could touch her trust and nodded. Soon I hit the road happily and within no minute, I came to the river side with the grain.
The river is broad and there was no bridge. Although the water seemed calm, I still felt a little not so sure about it. Could it be too deep for me?
I looked around, trying to find someone. "Maybe I could get some useful suggestions." That was my hope. Just then, my eyes met Uncle Buffalo, an elder full of knowledge. I trotted to him, with a bow and the usual greeting "Excuse me." Uncle Buffalo was having his grass dinner, but he paused and guestured me to go ahead. I told him what's in my head. Uncle Buffalo laughed:"Believe me, my son. This river is no deeper than my ankle. Surely you can do it. You're a horse." Immediately, my confidence came back again. I appreciated Uncle Buffalo's advice and matched on and returned to the river bank.
Right there, an urgent voice sounded over my head,"Stop, my friend!" It was Mrs. Squirrel. She was staring right in this way and I could tell the concern in her eyes. "You may drown if you decide to cross the river, ON YOUR BARE FOOT." She sighed,"My husband just lay down his life there two days ago. It's horrible, and the river definitely is too deep." I felt sorry for her and thanked for her important information.
Yet I was totally confused. I had to turn back to Mom and listen to what she would say about this.
Seeing my return, Mon smiled,"Seems my little hero has some trouble here." I blushed and told her the whole thing."Well, follow me and I'll show you,"Mom said.
When arrived, Mom told me to put one of my forelegs into the river. And I easily found out it's indeed shallow near the bank. Then Mom asked me to advance, and I carefully followed the instruction。 Step by step, I came close to the middle of the river. And then I realized the actual depth is about half the length of my legs. It's not as shallow as Uncle Buffalo put it. However, even crossing it on my bare foot, it won't cost my life. Mrs. Squirrel was wrong either.
Mom waded to me and smiled again,"shall we do this together?" I smiled back and we crossed the rest half of the river.

Self Reference, Alter Reference and Risk Aversion

Self Reference, Alter Reference and Risk Aversion
Interpretation of a Fable

A colt came to a river bank and was afraid that it was too deep for him to cross the river. He had received three different advices from an old ox, a little squirrel and his mother, respectively. The message of the ox told him the river was shallow enough to wade. However, another message from the squirrel directed to the contrary, it said that the river was too deep and dangerous to drown the colt. His mother taught him that it should be wise to think other's advices over and then have a try personally. The colt had followed his mother's words, and found that the river was neither as shallow as the ox said, nor as deep as the squirrel said when he waded in the river. This fable tells that truth comes from praxis through trial and error.

However, reality is more complex than the fable's situation. For the poor colt, crossing an unknown river is a real risk of losing life. Therefore, the best option is not risk-taking but risk aversion, which means collecting as accurate information as possible before taking any action or decision. Here both the ox and the squirrel released the true messages although it seems to be contrary to each other at the letters. It is true to their respective reference of frame. For the ox, his message is meaningful in term of his height. The same token applies to the squirrel's message, the river is deep only in term of his friend's body size. In human society, this is a common phenomenon called self reference by sociologists, which refers to a basic social fact that each individual experiences and structures his/her environments only by reference to his mind. The difference between self reference and alter reference lies in the secret of misunderstanding of human communication.

Therefore, the better advice for the colt would be this: taking frame analysis, making sense of messages in term of their own reference of frame before you have to take the risk of trying it by yourself.

Rethinking the Story of A Little Horse Crossing a River

Do you still remember the story of the little horse who manages to cross a river told by your primary school teacher? It is no doubt that any child who is bid to listen to this story is supposed to be the protagonist, the hero or heroine of the story, that is to say, the child is seen as and encouraged to act as the little horse. Maybe this is the first metaphor we learned from those superior to us. You are the little horse and thus ought to do what the little horse does. Can you remind what you felt when you heard this story for the first time? As to me, it is a sweet recollection. I was as brisk and vigorous as a little horse and jumped and galloped to do anything what my teacher and my parent told me to do.

But what does the story mean? What is its significance? Do you ever think twice about it?

In a retrospective way, it reveals to me that there are important characters in the story that have been long neglected. They are the old ox, the squirrel, and the mother horse. It is interesting to think about why they are ignored. I doubt that even the storytellers, the teacher, the mother, had deliberately ignored these characters. The focus is on the little horse, that is, the child. When reread this story, I would like to pay more attention to the miserable squirrel one of whose companions has drowned in the river, the warmhearted and a little bit simple-minded old ox, and, maybe the most important, the mother who seems to be a good educator who not only teaches the little horse but also so many children wisely and patiently. As growing up, we may try to observe the world from a broader perspective, not to be too much egoist. When he crossed the river successfully at last, the little horse may be grateful to those who helped him. It is a pity that the mother didn’t tell the little horse to thank the ox and the squirrel. A good person shall bear in mind that it is important to know thanksgiving.

Another detail is also interesting. Do you remember that you were told this story usually because you just faced some difficulty? The little horse should find by himself how deep the river is. The river is not as deep as the squirrel warned, and it is not as shallow as the ox said. In this sense, this is a story of initialization. It is not easy for a little horse to tip his hooves into a flowing river. But once he makes it, he begins to grow up. That is the same for a child. There are so many things which we do for the first time. The experience of overcoming difficulties is the real catalyst for growth. Once you make it, you will not forget it. The first time of swimming, of riding a bicycle, of raising hand and answering a question in the class, of standing before all the classmates to read an article, so on and so forth, all these mark the progress a child makes. This simple story of the little horse is an allegory, or a parable of encouragement. Maybe it is the original source of encouragement.

Do you still take it as a simple story just for drooling children? The great educator Cai Yuanpei had committed to educate the young to be people with free spirit and independent personality. This aim of education seems to be difficult to reach even today, if not more difficult. If we think more intensively, we will find the story of the little horse tells the same thing as Cai Yuanpei did or wanted to do, although at a simple and initial level. The essence is the same, is to encourage independent thinking and doing. But we find that it is difficult to follow this principle. We are used to follow what the most people say and do. We are blind people without awareness of the blindness. For example, when everybody says that the educational certificate is the higher the better, almost no one can resist the temptation of it. We just fail to remember what we learned from a seemingly simple story when we were little children.

[I just realize that I have taken for granted that the one who lives with the little horse in the stable is a mother. What is your impression? It is just an old horse, so not necessarily a mother. Maybe you have made the same mistakeJ Do not take anything for granted. That is the last thing I learn from rethinking the story of the little horse.]

One day, a colt took a bag of wheat to the mill.

As he was running with the bag on his back, he came to a small river. The colt could not decide whether he could cross it. Looking around, he saw a cow grazing nearby. He asked, "Aunt Cow, could you tell me if I can cross the river?" The cow told him that he could and that the river was not very deep, just knee high.

The colt was crossing the river when a squirrel jumped down a tree and stopped him. The squirrel shouted, "Colt, stop! You'll drown! One of my friends drowned just yesterday in the river." Not knowing what to do, the colt went home to consult his mom.

He told his mom his experience on the way. His mother said, "My child, don't always listen to others. You'd better go and try yourself. Then you'll know what to do."

Later, at the river, the squirrel stopped the colt again. "Little horse, it's too dangerous!"

"No, I want to try myself", answered the colt. Then he crossed the river carefully.

On the other side of the river, the colt realized that the river was neither as shallow as the cow said nor as deep as the squirrel told him.

You see, real knowledge comes from practice.

Reading "Xiaomaguohe" felt colt to the river, I wonder if deep uncle asked cattle, cattle uncle said shallow water and can wade past. In the side of the squirrels to tell it, deep water, unable to cross. Pony never mind, it's mother think about it more, to test. So pony tackling the mother finally cross the river. Therefore, I could not help but think of "practice" in it. According to popular legend, ancient Britain only as an observation tomato plants, no one dares to try to eat a food that is poison. A painter finally courage to eat a tomato, he was not poison, Instead, the first taste of a tomato that sweet taste. I think everyone afraid of death, and that the artist in order to verify the truth, the courage to practice, for human food, like add a new food. He likes to eat tomatoes that we eat than any one are sweet. Practice is not blind, it must rely on theoretical guidance. Practice should not be swayed by others, on your own mind and courage. As crumbling down, and if it blindly believing uncle of cattle will be gone immediately. If it blindly believing in the case of squirrels forever unable to cross the river. It is only from the former two and in accordance with their actual judgment, can be successfully and successfully through the river. Therefore, the practice is a necessary process. Practice is the only way forward development, Sometimes practice is to be up to 100 or even 1,000 times the failure to achieve the objective. Our great party in the darkest days of imperialism not to succumb not national capital industry temptation resolutely to the path of socialism of the very few people traveled the road, With their practice, and after one step exploration and struggle, and finally the establishment of the new China. Also in the contemporary analysis of the current situation and its own characteristics, under the premise of not interference by foreign ideas and confused, resolutely embarked on the reform and opening up with Chinese characteristics of the practice of the road. I believe that, on our practice we will succeed. Conversely, some people own obsequious and not practice, practice, seeing others also eyes covetously; what success or block, Such a person whose only life to live. We are the future of the motherland, should be brave to practice and innovation, because the outcome of practice is not necessarily successful, But the utopian results will not succeed. 恶搞一下

pony & river is a very good story which is told for decades. unfortunately, few tale-tellers and audience really understand the undercoverd meaning that the story tries to deliver. on the other side, it's not that bad. coz the audience are mostly children, a disguised world is surely more beautiful than the real one.

the real thing which the stroy tried many times to remind us is : NEVER TRUST ANYONE!!!!

astonished, are you? ok, I am not lying, let's come back to the story's detail and make some analyse. in the story, we see that Pony itself is a child, it is supposed to know nothing about the properties of the river and the personalities of "human beings", but the Uncle Bull is apparently an elder, who should have abundant experience of life and people. let's imagine such a scence: a boy come to a 40 year's old man and asked whether it's safe to ford across a river..... by no means we can get the result that an nice guy will tell the boy it's safe!!! any nice adult( like you and me )will know it's safe for us and will not forget to warning the boy it will be dangerous for him to do so. further more, I would like to watch a while to make sure that the boy won't do it after my warning(you might be much better to even try to inform his parents about the dangerous attempt of the boy) . now look back to see what the "Old Uncle" in the story did. "it's safe, go ahead." He want to see the boy to be killed in the river.

The story changed it's original end to make it nice. in my memory, the water is just over the pony's waist and he make it. but no body noticed that, for a pony. his waist is his body, and when a water suface is JUST OVER his waist, that means he has only his head and neck above.... forget about the bag of wheat that the pony carries(i bet it is carried on the pony's back and will definitely be soaked with water), only the head above the water itself is a very dangerous thing for a child, i can hardly find out a mother who will let her child into a river with only his head above, a small dip or a small torrent will kill the child anytime!!! How dangerous the UNCLE BULL is!!

if you could remember what i said in last paragraph, you would start doubting the pony's mother's words.....ok. i ama fragile person and can not afford such a result on the mothers and would like to leave it to you guys. have a nice day!!

The little horse crosses the river

A little horse lives by the river with his mother. He always follows the mother horse. Sometimes the mother horse must goes to take bags of foods. Then he must play by himself. Still he lives happily with his mother.

As time goes by, the little horse grows up.

One day, the little horse tells his mother that he has grown up. He thinks he is as tall as the mother horse now. He can do something for his mother. The mother horse feels glad to hear that. She thinks for a while and asks the little horse to carry a bag of rice to the other side of the river.

When the horse comes to the bank, he can’t find any bridge. How to cross the bridge?

Then the little horse meets Uncle Cow.

Uncle Cow says, “Hi, Little Horse! Where are you going?”

“Uncle Cow, I have to go to Aunt Pig’s house. It’s on the other side of the river. Is the river deep? And can I wade across?” Little Horse says.

Uncle Cow says, “It isn’t deep. I just come back from the other side and the water only reaches my knee.”

The little horse is going to cross the river. The Sister Squirrel comes and shouts, “Stop! Stop! The river is so deep that one of my friends has been swept away.”

The little horse says, “It’s so lucky. I didn’t wade in.”

Uncle Cow asks him to wade across the river. But the Sister squirrel asks him not.

But what should the little horse do now?

To go or not to go?

Uncle Cow thinks it isn’t deep but Sister Squirrel says it is too deep. Then he decides to go back to ask mother.

The little horse talks to his mother, “Mummy, Mummy. Aunt Cow said that the river was not deep. I could wade across the river. But Sister Squirrel said that it was very deep. I couldn’t wade across the river. What should I do? ”

The mother horse says, “Both Uncle Cow and Sister Squirrel are right in their own way. Aunt Cow’s body is big, so he said the water was not deep. Sister Squirrel’s body is small, sp he said the water was deep. You should try by yourself.”

Then the little horse comes to the river with his mother. He walks across the river slowly and he find out that the river is not difficult to wade across.

=========================================================
The fable says that a little horse wade across the river according to its practice.real knowledge comes from practice.in fact, nowadays many things are complex and are easy to confuse you, if you don't try it, maybe you never can find the truth.during my real work, when my boss tell me to charge project, I never say:"I can't", whatever I can do or not, I only say:" please let me try." As I believe if I try my best to do something, I can do it well.

A little horse can understand the meaning :"real knowledge comes from practice." why you not? if you want to make a great progress, you must knows that no matter whatever things you do, you should think it over and over again, and at last try it by youself.

1 No matter what others say, never stop your feet.

2 You must try and try again. Though you will make mistakes, you can get more.

3 It is right or wrong, That depends on the people who is and the efforts the person makes.

4 When on one can help you, you must think it out independently.

5 Don't be afraid of the failure .

The river of life, we wade by ourselves
Four years have passed since my graduation from university. My life was facing great challenge from the society. My dream was to find a stable work with good salary before my graduation, and I made it come true eventually. Leisure life, light-pressure work, well-paid salary, a small and beautiful city, everything seems fine and comfortable. While one day I suddenly realized it was not the life I really wanted. My previous ambitions have vanished with the leisure life and the lapse of the time. At that time one of my friends from Beijing said to me that if you want to maintain your present life you may have a stable and comfortable life; if you go out of your current life you may have anther new life and you may realize your unrealized dream.
A river appeared in front of me, but I really didn’t know how to wade it. If I quitted my job and went outside, I had to start from scratch. Without a fixed job, a comfortable living place, parents’ love and care, all I could do was to face the challenge and depend on myself. Some of my friend had ever said to me that the life in Beijing was not easy. There were a lot of unexpected difficulties in front of you. The competition was severe there, the life pace was fast, and the salary was not too high. While some said that although it’s not easy to live there, there were a lot of chances. More importantly there was something different from other big cities in Bering. Something you could not describe, but you could feel if you live there. That’s the fascination of that ancient and modern city.
I was just like a colt who didn’t know how to wade the river. I was wandering on the riverside. One day my father said to me: “my child, try to do everything you want to do. If you don’t have a try, you will never have a chance. If you choose to do it, even you cannot make a great success, you are still the successor”. Yes, my father was right. Without a try, nothing I would have. My father gave me a piece dictum said by Rossetti: “I’ll try” does great things every day, “I can’t” gets nothing done.
Eventually, I went to Beijing and began my wading that year. Four years have lapsed I have waded that river. There I experienced a lot of things, bad or luck, difficult or glorious. I felt great for myself because I waded through the river by myself. I have found a good job after great hardship. My life has changed and my beliefs have also changed greatly.
Now I am living in anther city for further education, as well as having a new job. These new chances were created by myself. Sometimes I think if I had not waded that river I would have nothing at all.
Maybe we will encounter many rivers in our life. Please remember that the river of life, we wade by ourselves.

The instructive story tells us that practice is the best policy.
In face of the new things, we are often inclined to ask the" wise man" for advice and help, however, no one could give us the only and best answer, but it's up to us to make our own choices. All we need to do to get the way out is go all out for it and pratice it, then we know what is what, just as the little horse knew the truth about the river after stepping into the water.
I'm delighted to see D.I.Y.(do it yourself) has become more and more popular among the younger generation. We need others' good advice and successful experience, though, we will enrich our life and explore the meaning of living through our personal participation and experience. I clap for and salute to all the DIYers for their courage and spirit of pursuit of truth.
We know the truth through practice. Practice is the best way out.

Labour for the big prize!

What the colt reacted was acceptable at first, but not far from sufficiency.

When the colt reached the river, the sound of gurgling water stopped him from going on. He asked for Uncle Cattle for help, whose words relieved his worries. But when attempting to cross the river, the warmhearted squirrel warned him not trying that, for the squirrel’s best partner drowned unfortunately right in the water. The colt, then, hesitated!
Factually, the colt reacted rightly at first. Without any previous knowledge of the river, if he had stepped into the water paying no attention to the running water. The blind attempt might have cost his precious life.
However, the problem lay in that that was all he knew to do. It was not nearly sufficient!
The opinions between Uncle Cattle and Brother Squirrel seemed to be contradictory, which puzzled the colt. So that the colt had no choice but to ask for his mother for help. This was also acceptable——His dear mother was believable, and virtually what she said at last helped him out. But think it twice, what if his mother was not easy to reach? Obviously, the colt needed to learn to deal with the problem himself.
The colt should have asked himself why the opinions of Uncle Cattle and Brother Squirrel contradicted? Were they worth listening to? As a large and tall enough animal, the water was that shallow for him, while the squirrel was too small for a running river! The colt himself was neither so big as a cow nor so short as squirrel. Before he put one of his feet into water, he should repeat the question to himself several times, “What would happen if I stood in the river? And was I tall and strong enough to keep standing and walking in the running water?
Maybe, thinking before we leap is always the best policy when facing awkward problems. This strategy can be applied to solve almost all kinds of social issues, for example, quite a number of people are chasing after higher and higher educational qualifications, whether the course of chasing is rewarding or not for him! If provided a good chance, why can’t one devote himself to work first, for chances are that one can continue pursuing one’s studies after laying the solid foundation of one's career!

Thoughts about Little horse crossing the river
The story of little horse crossing the river told me that the practice was the exclusive truth and the concrete question must be analyzed .The little horse only knew the depth of river and conditions of himself to cross the river .In 1997,china took back the dominion of Hongkong, but there were different systems and living manners in Hongkong other than the mainland. In that special circumstance , Chinese state analyzed his temporal situation and actualized the police of 'One Country, Two Systems' . The police was proved to be correct . Hong Kong's stability and continued development as an international city since reunification in July 1997 have depended upon the successful implementation of the principle of 'One Country, Two Systems'. This framework ensures that Hong Kong retains its distinct identity and strengths as an international business, financial, shipping and aviation centre .Besides, Western analysts conclude today that the 'One Country, Two Systems' has permitted Hong Kong to maintain its unique character. Long-term success depends on preserving the quality and integrity of Hong Kong's outstanding cadre of civil servants, the rule of law and an independent judiciary. In a word , the 'One Country, Two Systems' adapted to the development of Hongkong.

There is a parable story: A little horse lives by the side of a river with his mother.
One day,his mother assigned a mission to him which the little horse must carry on an
abundance of salts to the other side of the river.

The next day , the little horse arrived at the river , carrying the salts on his back .
Accidentally , he fall down in river when he covered a half of the distance . But when he
got up form the water ,he felt astonished that the things on his back bacome lighter.

Several days after, his mother assigned a mission to him once again. With a
happy felling, the little horse crossed the river . AS he arrived at the centre of the river,
he recall the accident happened on seceral days ago. so he fell down in river intentionally .
Hower, the result was not live up with his expectation. The things on his back were
became heavier!

According to the parable, I learned that we should accomplish the mission
honestly no matter what mission we do. Then we can accomplish one mission outstanding.

After reading the fable “a little horse crossing the river” I realized that in our lives we often just like that little horse in the story. We have enthusiasm to do everything well before we set about to do that. But in the process of doing things we usually feel puzzle because we don’t know the correct answer to so many questions. In such situation, what should we do? Consult other people? But the opinion of different people may maybe different. I have several thoughts to solve such problem we may encounter in our work.

Firstly, on one hand, we should take the advice from other people into consideration and on the other hand we can’t be credulous. When we face a new task on which we have not experience, the best way to gain knowledge is to consult expertise of such area. But we can’t take their experience directly. Because their knowledge came from their own situation and ours must comes from our own situation. So we should take account of their advice but add our own thoughts.

Secondly, learn to be independent. We can’t always depend on our parents, teachers or boss to make decision for us. We should learn to make decision by our self. It may be difficult at the first time but it is definitely that we can make our own correct decision at last. So, in our work and research as long as we think hard and carefully there always be a good idea waiting for us.

Last but not the least, keep the struggling spirit. No pains no gains. There’s no free bread for lazy man. If a person loses the struggling spirit, I can conclude that he can do nothing successfully. When we face difficulty the best way to solve it is not to give up and wait passively but to struggle hard to overcome it. If you can do this you will be a true man.

I think what the story told us is that the experiences are the most correct with the things done by yourself. Because everyone has his special status, you can get the correct information only by yourself.

This story let me remember a lot of things in life, especially things about IT. For example, there are a lot of discussion about the operating system of Windows, Vista and XP. Some people say Vista is good, and everyone will use the Windows Vista sometime later. But others disagree with them, thinking there is no any reason to use Vista in place of XP. XP can do everything that Vista can do. In the meanwhile, Vista has a lot of disadvantages. For instance, Vista needs higher configuration of computer and more power. In fact, I think, if you can do every routine in the system of Windows XP, you needn't to update it. And the defects in Vista are correct only when you think so after you use the Vista by yourself. This instance is also fit for the others products of Microsoft company.

Another example is about the anti-virus software. There are many people ask which anti-virus software is the best. Because the conditions of everyone's computer vary, the rules of anti-virus need change. For example, if you are often online, you need to an anti-virus software which is good at kill Trojan, like 360safe. But if you often use U-disk to copy files, you will need a softeware like Karparsky.
