E.G.:
Otherwise, we should have to act in accordance with the will of the Americans, or of people in other developed countries or in the Soviet Union. How much independence would we have then?

否则，只能是看着美国人的脸色行事，看着发达国家的脸色行事，或者看着苏联人的脸色行事，那还有什么独立性啊！

如果是日常的用语这样讲的可能性很小

will not eat out of one's hand
这是比较好的说法
更拗口一点的说法是
will not eat out of the palm of one's hand
当然应该还有更好的说法不为我所知

上面其它我列的也可以用于口语，
但是一般是主动语态多

其它我所知的可能可用的讲法还包括：

no longer let sb call the shots
no longer let sb call the tune
no longer let sb pull the string
no longer let sb twist his/her arm
no longer let sb twist him/her around one's little finger

no longer let sb lay down the law
no longer at one's beck and call

这个……是中文的歧义问题，当然也怪我表述得不清晰准确。其实read one's face的重点不在“猜测心思”上。
举个真实生活中例子吧，有次我上课的时候，老师讲的东西特多又特快，我们学生都傻了，一个个面无表情。老师就说"I can't read your faces."，让我们有问题赶紧举手问。你说的look and study用来解释我说的这个句子是非常合适的。
