If the subject in a sentence is separated by as well as, the verb takes always a singular verb.Hunger as well as sleep is often the reason for despair
Compare:
Hunger and sleep are often the reason for despair. And the emphasis is always on the first noun. By the way, sleep can hardly be a "reason for despair", but lack of sleep can (be a cause for depress).
