The Huangpu River, running across from South to North, divides Shanghai into two parts. Pudong won its fame because it is located to the east of Huangpu River. During 1920s to 1930s, with the setup of the financial and commercial region centered by Waitan, the foreign businessmen and domestic capitalists began to extend their commercial activities to Pudong region. However, due to the obstruct of Huangpu River, the economical development of Pudong region was greatly affected. Thus, the sharp comparison was formed--- a large number of economical activities were gathered in one side while the other one appears to be thousands of acres of farmland.
Nevertheless, since the year 1950 when the open of Pudong was announced by the central government, the construction of new Pudong region step forward rapidly. High buildings and large mansions are being raised just like the growing bamboo shoots after rain. The beautiful rurality are in a harmonious state with the modern buildings. Pudong is stepping into the new century with a fire-new outlook.
